Cary Visual Arts, Inc.
Gateway to Excellence, 1999, James T. Russell About CVA

Cary Visual Art began as a committee of the Cary Chamber of Commerce in 1996 and was incorporated as an autonomous nonprofit organization in 1997. Over the years CVA has placed many works of public art. CVA inspires the community to take an active role in the commissioning and implementation process. Selection committees involve private citizens, property owners, local businesses, arts professionals, and municipal representatives.

Much like the history of public art, CVA’s early selections exemplify the "art in public places” approach. Freestanding pieces of sculpture were placed throughout Cary to provide aesthetic enjoyment, arouse community pride, and fuel economic development. These projects successfully inspired community interest and support, paving the way for a more complex public art planning process.

We view partnerships as an essential component of public art. By involving new groups with the commissioning process, public art has a greater impact, level of appreciation, and longevity. The comprehensive approach has provided a vast array of sites and community involvement. CVA commissions and places both permanent and temporary public art in addition to providing educational opportunities and art consulting services. CVA also maintains a library that anyone can utilize.
